Art You Can Carry Around

When it comes to bags, “subags” is more than a carryall, it’s a lifestyle. The Viennese accessories line strikes the spot-on balance between design, painting and fashion.
An internationally renowned costume designer, Su Sigmund, launched the 1st collection in 2013. In May 2014, she was named designer of the month at MQ Point.

The collection is made of high-quality, vegetable-tanned leather — the kind that smells expensive and ages beautifully. The bags (cross-body, over the shoulder, or strapped to your wrist) come in rectangular format and various sizes to correspond to the shape of a painting that you could also hang on your wall.

Each bag is made by Su herself by cutting out parts of the painted canvas which is water repellent. The handles and the upper rim of the bags are made of premium nubuck leather. In addition, each bag has inside zippered pocket. She uses acrylic based paints to paint on the bags, which will not stain nor break. However, the special blend of color components remains her secret. The bags can be cleaned with a damp cloth and wipe gently.

While I covet the whole line — from the adorable mini pouch and to the structured duffel— my favorites are the envelope clutches in striking colors. They’re sophisticated, have a classic, minimalist appeal and timeless look.

Check out her catalog to see how the paintings are recreated onto the surface of the bags. Currently subags are available at three locations: the gallery DESIGN & ART, her studio and her shop.At a price range from €29-€350, there’s truly something for everyone! You can indulge in the small luxury of owing a bag with contemporary art on it. I mean real art work…not a picture. They make great presents and are representative of Austrian’s crafts.
